Dog Park Essentials

SO YOU GOT A DOG, NOW WHAT?

Having a dog is great, but when they are running around like a crazed beast and barking at everything, it’s time to socialize.

But before you grab your keys, make sure you are prepared! Grab a bag and stuff it with these essentials!

Harness – For events where your dog could get really excited and pull on the leash, it’s best to have them wear a harness. It took me a while to find one that I thought Schmidt was comfortable in, and this one I got from Target is easy to put on and doesn’t change shape.

Leash – Make sure you pick the right leash for your activity. Dog walks are better with a short leash, and potty walks are better with a retractable leash. I personally take a short leash for the dog park, or keep my retractable at the shortest length. At the dog park, Schmidt is off leash most of the time, so it doesn’t really matter.

Poop Bags – Most dog parks have poop disposal stations, but it’s safe to bring some just in case. Some dog parks have walking areas and park areas, so it’s good to have your own bags if you decide to go on a walk.

Towel – You can never predict whats going to happen at the dog park, so always bring a towel. They might be covered with slobber or found themselves in a puddle before the day is over.

Water – You can bring water in a sports bottle, but I prefer to use a Gulpy . It’s a bowl and a bottle in one, and it is just really convenient. Most parks have water, but sometimes they are out of order or something has happened.

Throw toys – Sometimes when you show up at the dog park, there is no one else there. Don’t let it be a wasted trip and make sure you have throw toys with you. I tend not to use toys if there are other dogs because I don’t want dogs to fight over the toys.

Treat – Only bring one treat, and don’t bring it with you to the park. This is just a fun treat for your pup to have on the way home.
