My experience with the Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up: Part 1

life changing magic of tidying up

As part of my moving experience, I really wanted to get rid of all the clutter in my home. In my previous move, I had gotten rid of a lot, but I still felt like I was surrounded by stuff.

After some research, I decided to pick up the Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. I had this plan to read the book and do everything step by step and bring you guys along my journey for the month of March.

Until I found out I was moving to Texas in less than a month…

SOOO, I have decided to split my experiences up. I am skipping straight to the getting rid of everything portion, and I will go back and do the rest of it once I am moved into my next home.

Purging was really important to me, so I was really excited to shed some of my excess clothing. I started by taking out all of my t-shirts. I literally still owned shirts from the 7th grade. I ended up getting rid of half of my tees, and I put the rest in the donation box to Goodwill.

A big part of the magic is putting out all of your clothes on the floor. I did this with limited floor space, so I went by clothing type. Next, I tackled my hangers, starting from crop tops to sweaters.

Also got rid of most of my shoes. When I was younger, I always bought cheap shoes from Forever21 that weren’t supposed to live past 4 months, but I kept them for three years. I also had shoes that were once nice with hole in the soles and talking heels.

It was just time for them all to go.

I counted the hangers after the destruction. I got rid of 119 items! After getting rid of everything, I really noticed how cramped my closet was before. The book says that your clothes are uncomfortable being clumped into your closet, and I really understood what that meant after this purging.

I put my sweaters into my dresser, like the book recommended. It saved so much space, and I had plenty of room after dumping old pajamas and tees.

I ended up donating one box to the dumpster, one box to my sister, one box to goodwill and one overflowing box to Plato’s closet.

FOUR BOXES OF CLOTHING!!

Next, I got rid of all my books that I have read and don’t think I will read again. I sold them to Textbooks.com and brought the rest to Goodwill.

I also tackled all my DVDs I do not watch anymore. I used a site called Decluttr that takes used electronics for cash. I didn’t get a lot of money from this, but I got a lot of DVDs out of my house.

It is easier for me to donate my things or sell them than to throw them away. I feel like I am disrespecting them if I dump them (I am strange, I know).

When it came to my papers, I had a lot of saved pamphlets for some reason. All of those went into the trash, and everything else got organized into files.

I also threw away a lot of makeup I no longer used or that was a weird color that did not match my skintone. A lot of it was really old, so I should have thrown it away years ago.

I also dumped any weird decor that did not meet my “farmhouse chic” theme I am trying to do in my home.

That’s it for part one! Part two (and possibly a three) will be on all the other aspects of the book!

Happy Purging!

XOXO

  • Wow, nice work on cleaning all that out! I bought the book as well ^^ and started reading it… I really need to finish it! It’s so inspiring and it feels so good to throw stuff out!

  • WOW, amazing work. I really need to get my hands on this book. I’ve moved from one room at my parents house into a 2 bedroomed house and find I have no room for anything…it’s ridiculous.

Can’t wait to see part two 🙂
